The 2017 – 2018 UNCCD Reporting Process
At the thirteenth Conference of the Parties (COP 13), Parties adopted a new strategic framework for implementing the Convention (decision 7/COP.13). The UNCCD 2018-2030 Strategic Framework not only provides guidance to UNCCD Parties on how to implement the Convention, but also serves as a monitoring tool for the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC) to assess implementation efforts undertaken by Parties.
Under the new strategic framework, Parties will report on the progress towards five strategic objectives related to the condition of ecosystems and populations, drought, global environmental benefits and the mobilization of financial and non-financial resources to support the implementation of the Convention. Parties will also share experience narratives on actual implementation efforts related to financial and non-financial resources, policy and planning, and actions on the ground.
The progress towards the strategic objectives will be measured through indicators. With a view of decreasing the reporting burden, Parties will receive templates prepopulated with default data on the three biophysical indicators (namely trends in land cover, trends in land productivity, and trends in carbon stocks above and below ground) and associated metrics. Information on those indicators will also be used to inform the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) processes and in particular SDG target 15.3.
For more detailed information, Parties can log on to the PRAIS3 portal using the link provided on the right hand side of the page.
PRAIS portal update
The PRAIS portal has been updated to facilitate the 2017-2018 UNCCD reporting. Parties can log on and access static PDF reporting templates, available on a temporary basis, and default data on the three biophysical indicators. While interactive reporting templates prepopulated with default data on the biophysical indicators are being finalized, the static PDF reporting templates can assist countries in familiarizing themselves with the new reporting requirements. Interactive reporting templates will be available by the end of December. Report submission should therefore be done using the interactive pdf files.
While reporting templates prepopulated with data on the three biophysical indicators are being developed by the UNCCD secretariat, Parties have been provided with blank templates through PRAIS to familiarize themselves with reporting requirements. These are available in all UN languages. The templates posted on this site are for general use to illustrate what UNCCD reporting requires.
A new release of the default data for the biophysical indicators covering the period 2000-2015 is available and accessible via the PRAIS3 portal.
Depending on country-specific circumstances, the interactive reporting template will be prepopulated with default data are derived from:
- The Status Update Note, for countries that participated in the Land Degradation Neutrality Target Setting Programme (LDN TSP) and submitted the note;
- The default data – original release (2000-2010), for countries that participated in the LDN TSP and did not submit the Status Update Note;
- The default data – new release (2000-2015), for countries that did not participate in the LDN TSP.
Capacity building workshops
As part of the Global Support Programme (GSP), capacity building workshops will be convened for eligible Parties that belong to regional implementation annexes. For other Parties outside of regional implementation annexes, a separate meeting is most likely to be organized and information will be posted as it becomes available. The secretariat will inform each region on their respective capacity building workshop in due course. The workshops are scheduled total place in March and April.
Timeline of reporting
If you have general questions on UNCCD reporting, please contact email@example.com. The UNCCD secretariat is planning to establish a help desk for Parties. As soon as it is established, the secretariat will inform Parties on where to submit the queries.
